Artists Must Suffer for the Art Artists Must Suffer for the Art Tumblr

The tortured artist is 1 of the great cliches of creativity. And like all cliches, it contains a grain of truth.

Look at the work of any truly great artist, and you volition find suffering is one of the big themes – whether it's the everyday misery of poverty (Dickens), the pain of unrequited dearest (Petrarch), the atrocity of war (Picasso), the inhumanity of hierarchy (Kafka), the desolation of passing time (Hardy), despair in the face of death (Tolstoy), or sheer existential anguish (Plath, Munch).

Even obviously trivial forms of popular entertainment, like the picture palace and pop music, have produced masterpieces of suffering, like Bowie'south Low, Joy Sectionalization'due south Closer, or just most anything by Kenji Mizoguchi or Leonard Cohen.

Is this surprising?

Non if you lot think the Buddha had a bespeak when he said suffering is an integral function of life – and if yous agree with Hamlet that art should concur "the mirror upwardly to nature". Then if you want to be a great creative person, sooner or afterwards, y'all're going to take to bargain with suffering.

There are two ways to exercise this: in your life and in your work.

Firstly, when you meet suffering in your ain life, don't shy abroad from it. Look it in the centre. Even in the midst of a disappointment, a betrayal, an disease, a broken heart, or fifty-fifty a bereavement, there should be a part of yous that observes and pays attention. That thinks "and so this is what it is like" – and remembers.

Graham Greene said "in that location is a splinter of ice in the centre of a author" that forces him or her to look when others look abroad. To make notes. To record and tell the story.

Secondly, when you lot're working and you come against a creative block, ask yourself whether you lot are shying abroad from dealing with painful emotions or experience. If then, and so the challenge is to stick with information technology – to stay with the pain, the suffering, the embarrassment, any it is – until you make a breakthrough.

Of course this risky and scary. And when you try to deal with a big theme like suffering, it's so much harder to maintain high standards of artistry. Yous tin can be then overwhelmed by the subject matter that your adroitness suffers. There's a dangers of becoming sentimental or ridiculous.

Just corking artists don't go bang-up artists by playing information technology safe.

And How Not to Do It

Everything I've written so far has been about what I would call genuine suffering – the kind of suffering that'due south function of life itself, which no truthful artist can avert.

Only in that location is likewise another kind of suffering, that's all too familiar to those of us of the creative persuasion (and our friends and family).

This is the kind of self-pitying, self-dramatising, maudlin 'suffering' that gives artists a bad proper name.

It'due south the kind of suffering that makes us tell ourselves in that location has never been a more sensitive, talented, unlucky and unjustly ignored creator than us.

It's the kind of suffering that sends united states to bed (or to the bar) for three days when we get a bad review, or when we are passed over for an honour, or when we receive another slight to our professional person pride.

It'southward the kind of suffering that makes u.s. moan and whinge and bitch to our partner, all-time friend, family unit, blog readers and/or Twitter followers, until their patience is stretched to breaking signal.

This kind of suffering should alert u.s.a. to the fact our former friend the Inner Whining Artist is on the prowl once again – and information technology's time to tell him/her/it to go out us alone then nosotros can become on with our work.

Permit'southward face it, nosotros all indulge in this kind of suffering from fourth dimension to time. Some days, information technology's hard to separate the two types of suffering. But it's essential that we keep trying.

If we're serious about making existent art, that is.

How about you?

Do you recognise the ii types of suffering for your art?

How do you go yourself to face to the first kind?

How do you stop yourself from indulging in the 2nd kind?
