How to Install Epoxy Flooring
If you've got a concrete floor in need of an overhaul, installing epoxy flooring onto the concrete surface can be an ideal way to give it a new life. The good news is that this coating is not difficult to install, and you can probably do it in one weekend.
What Is Epoxy Flooring?
Epoxy flooring contains a combination of resins and hardeners, which react chemically to each other to become a rigid epoxy surface that binds with the existing substrate. While concrete is known for its porous nature, the epoxy coating on top of it will prevent permanent stains. After curing, you're left with a coating on your floor that's exceptionally durable and strong.
Different Types of Epoxy Floor Paints
Epoxy flooring suppliers create paints in three main types: solid, solvent-based and water-based. These epoxies come in clear, tinted or with colored specks.
Solid epoxy doesn't have solvents, making it a challenge to apply it. It's best to leave application of solid epoxy to a professional.

The cement needs to be completely clean. You'll need to apply a few layers of the epoxy, allowing each layer to cure for 12 hours.
The shiny surface of epoxy can make it slippery when wet.
Applying the Epoxy
Before applying the epoxy, fill any cracks in the concrete, and grind the filler to make the cement perfectly smooth. Clean the cement with a power scrubber, and degrease the cement, if necessary. Mix muriatic acid with water, applying this mixture to the concrete. Then, scrub the concrete with a power scrubber or an acid brush to etch it. Allow the floor to dry completely and give it a final vacuum. Make sure the floor is perfectly dry and at least 55 degrees.
Follow paint suppliers' or manufacturers' instructions to mix the epoxy fully. Then apply it with a brush, first along the perimeter. Switch to a roller for the main area of the floor. Allow the first coat to dry fully, and then apply a second coat. Allow the second coat to dry to finish.
